Hendrike Barz Metzler
Hendrike's work is distinguished by it's deceptively simple designs. On closer examination the complexity of her pieces is gradually revealed. Subtle colours of finely crafted precious metals are worked in combination with silk which using an ancient technique, she hand weaves into intricately patterned Kumihumo braids on a Japanese braiding loom.
Hendrike usually begins her designs by making abstract drawings which she then transfers onto the human body, translating them into wearable pieces.
The techniques and materials are complimentary. The soft silk of the braids contrasts with folded, textured or fused silver, argentium, and 18ct gold metals.
To Hendrike it is only when they are worn that her pieces come fully to life.
